The building of this monastery began in 1506, blending Gothic,\nRenaissance, and Baroque styles. The church, the Sancta Sanctorum and Sacristy\nillustrate the rise of the Spanish and Andalusian Baroque style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Named a monument of cultural interest, the monastery houses a\nvaluable collection of paintings by the Carthusian monk S\u00e1nchez Cot\u00e1n, as\nwell as by Bocanegra and Carducho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church was completed in the early 17th century by\nCrist\u00f3bal de V\u00edlchez and has a single nave. The fa\u00e7ade is made of grey marble\nwith two large Ionic columns, made by Joaqu\u00edn Hermoso in 1794. The door, which\ndivides the choir stalls, is by Jos\u00e9 Manuel V\u00e1zquez. It is inlaid with ivory,\ntortoiseshell, silver, ebony and wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sancta Sanctorum is behind the main altar and is accessed\nthrough a beautiful door of Venetian glass. The original tabernacle was made of\nsilver, but it was looted by the Napoleonic soldiers. Today\u2019s tabernacle is\ncarved from precious woods and dates back to 1816. The paintings, depicting\nscenes from the Old Testament, are by Palomino, who also painted the cupola in\n1722 with the help of Risue\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sacristy is considered to be one of the finest works of\nSpanish Baroque. It is rectangular in shape with a vaulted ceiling. The marble\nsocle and the chests are both by the Carthusian monk J. Manuel V\u00e1zquez, who\ntook 34 years to complete them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monastery was lived in until 1836 when, under the Ecclesiastical\nConfiscations of Mendiz\u00e1bal, it was taken away from the monks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
